Exclusive Interview With Deaf Actress Hillary Baack

Watch Video (Captioned) - Deaf Actress Hillary Baack On The Red Carpet of The East Movie Premiere. The East opens in select theaters on May 31, 2013.

The East, a suspenseful and provocative espionage thriller from acclaimed writer-director Zal Batmanglij and writer-actress Brit Marling, stars Marling as former FBI agent Sarah Moss.

Moss is starting a new career at Hiller Brood, an elite private intelligence firm that ruthlessly protects the interests of its A-list corporate clientele.

Handpicked for a plum assignment by the company's head honcho, Sharon (Patricia Clarkson), Sarah goes deep undercover to infiltrate The East, an elusive anarchist collective seeking revenge against major corporations guilty of covering up criminal activity.

Determined, highly-trained and resourceful, Sarah soon ingratiates herself with the group, overcoming their initial suspicions and joining them on their next action or "jam." But living closely with the intensely committed members of The East, Sarah finds herself torn between her two worlds as she starts to connect with anarchist Benji (Alexander Skarsgård) and the rest of the collective, and awakens to the moral contradictions of her personal life.

Deaf Parent's Story: Raising Hearing Son With Sign Language

Who am I, my name is Nathan, and I am the father of two hearing boys. I am going to tell a story about my first son who is 7 and in the first grade. He is just an average boy, good in some areas, weak in a few, and a normal boy. He hears, talks, and signs. My younger boy is completely different, has no hearing issues, hears, talks, and signs of course. The boy's mother and father are Deaf; we have deaf relatives as well.

Deaf Parent's Story: Raising Hearing Son With Sign Language, Part 1 & 2.

Video by deafpower12

Script Part 1; Who am I, my name is Nathan, and I am the father of two hearing boys.

I am the PE/health/Weightlifting teacher at the Washington School for the Deaf. Of course, I get to see other Deaf kids here at the school that help me think more about my parenting skills and what I try with my kids. I often talk to my wife how we can be the best parents we can be because we are Deaf parents with two hearing boys. But the oldest, we learned a lot from, and the youngest is obviously way different from his older brother. So that is why I feel that I must share my story with you hearing and Deaf parents that it is so important that you use sign language with your child, regardless if they are hearing or Deaf, sign language is a guaranteed language.

This is my way of contributing to the many videos I see popping up that have touched me about hearing parents raising Deaf children; their stories on how they were successful or had a rough time. Some are sad, some are positive. So this is my chance to contribute to the development of using sign language with all babies, hearing and Deaf.

So this is my story, it starts when I had my first son. When he was born, 7 years ago, me and my wife, who is from a Deaf family, me being the only Deaf in my family; we were at the hospital, the nurse talked to us, we told the nurse that we expected the baby to be born Deaf. The nurse wrote down on the notes that "Parents expect baby to be born Deaf, it is ok to fail the hearing test." We felt that was very nice that the nurse did not respond with sorrow or negativity. So later when the baby was born, I went with the nurse and our son to get the newborn screening test. They put headphones on him and patches on his head; made him look like a mini Eminem.

Anyways, during the test, one of the ears took a long time and "failed". The nurse looked at the note and looked excited and said, "Maybe he will be Deaf". I liked that feeling when the nurse was happy and not negative. Then the other ear passed quickly. The nurse said, "Maybe one ear will be Deaf, lets try again just to be sure". We did the test again; the same ear took a long time but passed this time. I was fine with it; I told the nurse "honestly, the baby will get language regardless if he is Deaf or hearing". The nurse agreed.

As time went on, my wife and me gave our son sign language, which he responded well to. I can speak and hear pretty well for a Deaf person, but of course I have a "Deaf accent". Many people think I am hearing, but important, we gave him language. When he was about 5 months, almost 6 months old, he signed his first word was Milk. Communication is so important, especially when you have a baby crying and you are trying to figure out what they want. Babies cannot begin to talk until much later and they can begin to sign much earlier; so when he signed milk at 6 months, that solved half of our mysteries when we knew he wanted milk or he wanted something else and was a happy boy when he communicated Milk and got it.

As time went on, when he turned one, he started to use his voice like normal hearing babies tend to do, but by that time, he had learned and used many signs to communicate with everyone. When he was one and a half to two years old, with my watching him and hearing people like my parents, we noticed that his speech was a bit diluted, and there were times when we noticed he would be completely Deaf and sleep through loud noises. We did not think much of it since he could be copying his parent's personality and voice tendencies as children often copy their parents, we didn't know. ...For FULL Script: https://www.facebook.com/nathan.boyes.16?ref=tn_tnmn.

History of Dylan Quick's Biography

Watch Video: (Captioned) - New Details: 2011 report sheds light on Dylan Quick's past.

KHOU.com: HOUSTON - Dylan Andrew Quick, the 20-year-old accused of stabbing 14 people on the Lone Star CyFair campus, is now on suicide watch.

On Wednesday, a court-ordered psychologist and his parents visited him in jail. According to a new report, Quick has struggled with suicidal thoughts for years. As you can seen at Prosecutors: College stabbing suspect Dylan Quick had long-held killing ‘fantasy’

More than two years ago, Quick simply vanished. His parents called Texas EquuSearch. Frank Black worked on the case.

On Tuesday, Black was watching news reports of the Lone Star College stabbings.

“They said they had him in custody and they showed pictures of him and I said that guy looks real familiar to me,” Black said. “I saw the hearing aid.”

So, Black went back through his old records. He said he “matched ‘em and said ‘that's the guy right there!’”

It was the same Dylan Quick who had been reported missing back in January of 2011. He was 18 at the time.

Black remembered friends and family saying Quick was sheltered, in part because of his impaired hearing.

“Said he’d been kinda pampered and coddled and stuff,” Black continued.

His notes recall the text Quick sent his parents: "If I continue to live at your house, I would probably commit suicide". ...READ MORE: http://www.khou.com/news/crime/Lone-Star-College-stabbing--202450261.html

Marlee Matlin - Wikipedia Article

VIDEO: (Captioned) - Marlee Matlin - Wikipedia Article.

Marlee Beth Matlin is an American actress. She is the only Deaf performer to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, which she won for Children of a Lesser God. Her work in film and television has resulted in a Golden Globe award, with two additional nominations, and four Emmy nominations. Deaf since she was 18 months old, she is also a prominent member of the National Association of the Deaf.

Video by SpeaksWiki

Early life

Matlin was born in Morton Grove, Illinois, to Libby (née Hammer) and Donald Matlin, an automobile dealer. She has two older brothers, Eric and Marc. She lost all hearing in her right ear and 80% of the hearing in her left ear at the age of 18 months. In her autobiography, I'll Scream Later, she suggests that her hearing loss may have been due to a genetically malformed cochlea. She also indicated that she is the only member of her family who is deaf. She is of Russian Jewish descent, and was able to have her Bat Mitzvah by learning how to read Hebrew phonetically; she was later interviewed for the book Mazel Tov: Celebrities' Bar and Bat Mitzvah Memories. Matlin graduated from John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights and attended Harper College.

In chapter 11 of her autobiography I'll Scream Later, she speaks of her two instances of child molestation -- by her babysitter at the age of 11, and by her teacher in high school.

Career

Matlin made her stage debut at the age of seven, as Dorothy in a children's theatre (ICODA) version of The Wizard of Oz, and continued to appear with the ICODA children's theatre group throughout her childhood. Her discovery by Henry Winkler during one of her ICODA theater performances ultimately led to her film debut in Children of a Lesser God (1986). That film brought her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama and an Academy Award for Best Actress.

In 1989, she played a deaf widow in Bridge to Silence. Matlin was nominated for a Golden Globe award for her work as the lead female role in the television series Reasonable Doubts (1991--1993) and was nominated for an Emmy Award for a guest appearance in Picket Fences. She became a regular on the series during its final season. She portrayed Carrie Buck in the television drama Against Her Will: The Carrie Buck Story (1994) based on the United States Supreme Court case Buck v. Bell 274 U.S. 200 (1927). In the movie, Matlin played a hearing woman for the first time and earned a CableACE Nomination as Best Actress.

Matlin appeared during the 20th season of the TV series, Sesame Street, with Billy Joel (She did a signing version of "Just the Way You Are", and kissed Oscar the Grouch). Matlin later had recurring roles in The West Wing, and Blue's Clues. Other television appearances include Seinfeld ("The Lip Reader"), The Outer Limits ("The Message"), ER, Desperate Housewives, CSI: NY and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She was nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards for her guest appearances in Seinfeld, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Practice.

In 2002, Matlin published her first novel, Deaf Child Crossing, which was loosely based on her own childhood. She wrote and published a sequel to Deaf Child Crossing, titled Nobody's Perfect, which was produced on stage at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in partnership with VSA arts in October 2007. In 2004, she starred in the movie What the Bleep Do We Know? as Amanda. She also hosted the 3rd annual Festival for Cinema of the Deaf in Chicago, October 15--18, 2004.

In 2006, she played a deaf parent in Desperate Housewives. She also had a recurring role as Joy Turner's (who made many jokes of Marlee's deafness at her expense) public defender in My Name Is Earl and played the mother of one of the victims in an episode of CSI: NY. That same year, Matlin was cast in season 4 of The L Word as Jodi Lerner, a gay deaf sculptor. She appeared in season 4 (2007), season 5 (2008) and season 6 (2009) as the girlfriend of one of the show's protagonists, Bette Porter, On February 4, 2007, Matlin performed the "Star Spangled Banner" in American Sign Language at Super Bowl XLI in Miami, Florida. In January 2008, she appeared on Nip/Tuck as a television executive.

On February 18, 2008, it was announced that Matlin would participate as a competitor in the sixth season of ABC's Dancing with the Stars. Her dance partner was newcomer Fabian Sanchez. Matlin and Sanchez were the sixth couple eliminated from the competition. Read original article available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marlee_Matlin

Deaf Entertainer Teaches Students With Comedy Act

VIDEO: Deaf entertainer teaches students with comedy act. Internationally renowned entertainer performs for Temecula ASL students.

Utsandiego.com - Decades ago, CJ Jones walked into a St. Louis, Mo., public school and was told he was not allowed to sign. The Temecula Valley High School students that the Deaf entertainer performed for Tuesday live in an entirely new and accepting world.

“It’s amazing to see the change,” Jones said through an interpreter. “It makes it a lot easier for Deaf kids to feel like, ‘Oh, I’m not alone. I’m not strange. I’m not different because I’m Deaf and everybody’s hearing.’

“If they see hearing people sign, they feel confident and empowered.”

For more than 30 years, Jones has been spreading that word through one-man shows like the one he delivered Tuesday for more than 200 American Sign Language students in Temecula Valley’s newly minted performing arts center.

Afterward, the school’s ASL club participated in a workshop a series of non-verbal acting, gesturing and miming exercises aimed at giving many of the students their first real opportunity to learn the nuances of sign language from a Deaf person who’s learned to live in a hearing world.

Video by HooplaHaChannel

“He’s inspirational for anybody whether you know sign language or not,” ASL teacher Darcy Calas said. “A lot of these kids have never had exposure to a Deaf person. To see him here and interacting with hearing people, to see how he’s able to communicate with the hearing world, it’s something that we just can’t teach in a classroom. You can’t learn that from a book.” ...READ MORE: http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/mar/12/education-jones-asl-deaf-students/

OCDAC Leader Dies at Age 50

VIDEO: Deaf community leader known as Uncle Ruckus dies at age 50. Richard Roehm was a founder of the Santa Ana-based Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center.

SANTA ANA – Richard Roehm aka Iron Teeth, chairman and a founder of the Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center, died Feb. 6. He was 50.

Roehm, who lived in the French Park area, suffered a heart attack and died at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, said Beth Koenig, the executive director of the nonprofit.

Roehm grew up in Glendale, graduated form Rancho Alamitos High School in 1981 and received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Cal State Fullerton. He worked for Disneyland, left the company and was disabled by the time he helped found the Santa Ana-based Deaf Advocacy Center in 1998, said Koenig. He served as CEO and president until 2010, when he became board chairman and Koenig became its executive director.

Roehm was a longtime fan of the "Law and Order" television series. She said he loved learning about and tracking volcanoes and earthquakes, enjoyed seeing Old Faithful eruptions via a webcam, and cared about animals, such as the pet lizard he kept, and Ruby, a mixed-breed dog who was his companion for many years.

Roehm had been hard of hearing as a child and became Deaf at age 11, Koenig said. She said he believed that nonprofits turned away people who needed help, so decided to start the Deaf Advocacy Center. The agency helps people with disabilities find employment and housing provides training in such areas as Braille, American Sign Language, computer skills and personal finances, and helps Deaf people with poor reading skills fill out forms.

The agency he helped found runs on a budget of $30,000 to $45,000 a year, mostly from sales on its eBay store and from donations, Koenig said. It relies on a roll of about 200 volunteers, about 20 of whom are regulars and about five of whom make up its core group, she said.

Roehm will be remembered as passionate, Koenig said. Many Deaf people are active bloggers and readers of blogs, Koenig said. ... READ MORE: http://www.ocregister.com/news/koenig-496357-roehm-deaf.html

Michael Hubbs, Deaf, Olympic Hopeful, A Fraud ?

VIDEO: Michael Hubbs, Deaf, Olympic Hopeful, A Fraud?

deafndumb.com - Michael Hubbs a Fraud: Still recalling the experience as clear as day, six years ago, when I first met this man, Michael Hubbs, back when I was just twenty years old. Coincidentally riding together on the Gallaudet bus over to the Union Station, and apparently so, one curious enough to entice a conversation with me.

Mike sat besides me from my aisle as we rode along without any passengers around. A new face, I thought as I really didn't care much about this person. With one's hair slicked back, a black t-shirt worn with tan cargo shorts, and some grey running shoes on. Waving to get my attention, one asked with a jittery composure, "what's your name?" signing with his mouth open, revealing his pearly white teeth, "do you work out?" as I was already unable to respond to his first inquiry...

'I AM' - Michael Hubbs.

"Clyde..." I responded... although a bit more eagerly, I then added, "yeah... I do work out, it's all that I ever do." Meh, meh, meh..... as a Deafie would gesture with one's lips, acknowledging with intrigue, Mike then asked, "how much do you bench?" "Do you squat?" Again... asking several questions without the proper knowledge of how to actually converse with somebody. I nodded along, "315 lbs... I squat okay, 315 lbs as well." Shaking his head, "that's bad!" he, already, went onto criticize me, as we were passing by New York Ave, onwards Union Station.

Naturally being distracted, I peered out the bus window to see who may have been waiting outside for the bus once only to find that there was nobody else around, before redirecting my attention t'wards Mr. Hubbs, "So hey... where are you going?" he asked. "Pentagon City Mall," I said, "to buy myself some protein and to bullshit around I guess." Meh, meh, meh, Mike did again with his stupid lips, still staring at me with those eyes jolted of such energy that's often found unmatched with most people that I've met. "Mind if I join you? I'm just metro-ing around to get some idea of Washington D.C. before I decide that I enroll myself in Gallaudet University." ... UPDATE...

Michael Hubbs Statement on DeafNDumb.com:

This will be the ONLY ONE TIME statement from me. It’s going to be simple. I have not made any comments ANYWHERE about this blog until now. I took the time to sit back and remain calm. This is a new experience for me. I am not going to make any comments about the blog telling if it was true or not. It does not matter. The point is that you need to ask yourself few questions. Do you really know me? What is the goal of this blog? What exactly is he trying to do and trying to win? Do you know the author? Do you know his history? Everything on the blog is the truth? Have you look at his facebook reading many different comments that he made? Am I the only one that he is pointing at? Why hold the past when it was about 6 or 7 years ago? The truth is let the ACTION do the talk. ... Read more: https://www.facebook.com/samuraiskater

Viewers not only loved his “Rudy”-like inspirational story, but also enjoyed his interactions with his coach Ortiz, who admitted Hamill “reminds me a bit of me.”
